The Legendary Roll of the Dice that Changed Cattlemen’s Steakhouse Forever

In 1945, Cattlemen’s Steakhouse was the subject of one of the most iconic bets in Oklahoma City history. During a late-night dice game at the Biltmore Hotel, Hank Frey, the then-owner of Cattlemen's, was down on his luck and desperate for a win.

He made a bold move, wagering his entire restaurant against local rancher Gene Wade’s life savings. The catch? Wade had to roll a "hard six" (two threes) to win. Against all odds, Wade rolled the hard six, and just like that, he became the new owner of Cattlemen’s Steakhouse.

The restaurant’s connection to this legendary dice roll remains strong to this day. The number “33” can still be found in the restaurant’s Hereford Room, symbolizing the lucky role that transformed Gene Wade into a restaurant owner and secured Cattlemen's place in Oklahoma’s rich history.

This is just one of the unique stories in our over 100-year history that adds to the charm of Cattlemen's, making it not just a place for great steaks but also a destination full of fascinating history.
